Looking for novelty helmet
"Paul Ciszek" wrote in message ... Does anyone manufacture novelty helmets that actually protect the head? I imagine that ANY novelty lid will protect your head better than those **** pots we see every day with an upside down headed Harley riding dentist sat underneath. An acquaintance has had a mishap (on a bicycle), the details of which he can't quite remember. :-( He is now willing to start wearing a helmet. But he would like, if possible, to get one that looks like the old Kaiser Wilhelm era german military helmets, with the spike on top. Oh ****ing perfect. Not only IS he a complete ****, he wan't to LOOK like one too. Class. I suppose a phony plastic spike could be glued on to a helmet of the right shape. Does anyone sell helmets that look like this? You can buy "sleeves" with horn aplenty, spikes, and probably even barnacles if you desire. I'm sure Google have something -- Beav VN 750 Zed 1000 OMF# 19 |

Regular Bicycle Foam Hats, er helmets, really only function for bump and scrape protection. Whole population studies have shown no statistically significant reduction in serious head injuries and death with bicycle foam hat use. And yet this study suggests otherwise:http://www.dft.gov.uk/pdf/pgr/roadsa...theme1/bicycle... Read this comment on that paper: http://www.cyclehelmets.org/papers/c2004.pdf First, examining only case-control studies (vs. time series studies of populations where helmet use has soared) restricts your sample to self- selected subjects. That is, people who are worried enough about head injury to don a helmet; and who, upon bumping their head (no matter how gently) want to check into an ER "just to be sure." This alone would generate lots of cases where a person wore a helmet, but had no head injury. If those same people wore a magic cloth cap blessed by their favorite religious figure, the results might be largely the same. Second, the authors note the decreases in riding that comes with helmet legislation. (Others have noted larger decreases; there is a strong chance that helmet promoters are hiding the magnitude of that problem.) Before promoting helmets, we _should_ be sure that any drop in serious head injuries isn't just from discouraging cycling. I have no doubt bike helmets prevent some minor injuries, like scrapes, cuts and some bruises. But they don't seem to have affected major injuries. Here's a less formal article that lays out the paradox - bike helmet use soaring, but per-rider head injuries rising as well: http://www.cyclehelmets.org/1028.html - Frank Krygowski |
