I've heard some athletes say that alcohol gives a fast burn calorie
effect on things like running sprints, but I never heard that it had
any benefit on a long ride.

I tested this theory just last month while riding near Bailey's Harbor,
Wisconsin. I would have preferred a banana and some Gatorade but the bar I
stopped at didn't have those but they did have vodka. Two quick ones with a
water chaser really seemed to help. They were quick ones because even though
it's a bike-friendly area, I have to admit I felt a bit out of place in my Once
TdF jersey. Pink spandex is great for visibility but not so good for blending
in at a bar during happy hour.

Depends on the type of bar you are in, surely ;-)

It was probably the pot belly in lycra and your shaved legs. You looked
ridiculous and you knew it, have some decency and throw on some shorts and a
shirt.

Even if that were my persuasion it would be a real bitch to dance in
carbon-soled road shoes with Speedplay cleats.

Nah, you'd be a *whizz* at break dancing ;-)
