Default Handlebar Tapes

I have been using many different kinds of handlebar tape to try and find one with good wear characteristics and is easy to put on. The Chinese are selling tapes that look pretty good but they are too thick or something and I have yet to get any of my handlebars taped up neatly with them.

The older cork tape was comfortable enough and they stretched adequately but they were easy to break when wrapping the bars. And they didn't have a particularly long life since the palms of gloves would wear them out and/or discolor the hell out of them.

There are rubber tapes out now that seem to have everything going for them except the colored exterior is nothing more than a skin and rubs off leaving the black rubber interior showing through.

Somewhere I obtained some fake cork tape that did not have any sicky tape on the inside. This allowed the tape to stretch very well. The one problem with this is that you had to have everything laid out since you couldn't turn loose of the tape at the end. So you'd have some electrical tape cut and sticking to the workstand and when you got to the end you'd tape it down. This stuff was great except that it was rather easy to damage. Rather than used the enclosed bar end pieces it would work out better to use those bar end plugs that had locks on them and then wrap the tape starting just inside of the plug. This works out pretty well. https://www.ebay.com/itm/20241228839...4AAOSwE25e4Uo5

Tip: use one of these when you want to have a break during handlebar tape installation:

That looks like a real good idea. That looks like a tool for tightening a cap on the old Campy bottom brackets but it looks too new to before that. What is it?

It is a Parktool spa-2 pin spanner:

I use it to adjust chain tension with a eccentric bottom bracket.

That's the accepted standard method. When I built and rode a
tandem regularly it seemed tedious. I made big holes in the
eccentric so any handy cylindrical thing could be used by
just turning the crank:

You are right. I found that also a much faster method. There is always a allen key that will fit in the existing hole but the damn BB can really be stuck.

"Me and my wife had a tandem for a short while but we had dramatically different cadences."

Trying to ride a tandem with your wife or girlfriend will ALWAYS start an argument. When she's not complaining that you're going too hard, she'll complain that you're not doing your share of the work!

Conventional wisdom on the tandem listserv is that wherever your
marriage is going, riding a tandem will get you there faster.

Been riding tandem with wife for 25 years. Last few years have
seen more tandem than single miles.
