Mountain biker airlifted to hospital

4:29 PM Sunday May 16, 2010

An injured mountain biker has been flown to Wellington Hospital in a
serious condition after a crash near Upper Hutt.

The Westpac rescue helicopter, with a Wellington Free Ambulance
paramedic on board, was called to the scene on a track above Maidstone
Park, Upper Hutt, at 1.25pm.

A 56-year-old Silverstream man was treated for a spinal injury and was
now in stable condition.

Westpac rescue helicopter crewman Dave Greenberg said the man was
travelling along a track and did not see an upcoming jump. "He said
his front wheel fell away and he was thrown over his handlebars,
landing on his head."

The man was wearing a helmet.

Hiker Dies Of Injuries Suffered In Fall

A 22-year-old man died last Saturday afternoon after a 60-foot fall
off the cliff at Potato Harbor on Santa Cruz Island. Trevor Correia,
a student from Santa Barbara City College, landed on a ledge situated
about 60 feet below the top of the cliff and well over 200 feet above
the harbor. Ranger Randy Nelson responded after being notified at
about 2:30 p.m. by one of Correia’s friends. He and two other park
employees were able to safely descend the slope at Potato Harbor,
where they found two bystanders assisting Correia. Nelson found Correia
unconscious, unresponsive, and with labored breathing. Initial emergency
medical treatment and monitoring continued until a Ventura County
Sherriff’s Department search and rescue helicopter arrived with paramedics.
Shortly following their arrival, Correia’s condition worsened and CPR
was begun, but he did not survive.

A helmet would not have mattered in a 60 foot fall. That is where you
die from internal injuries anyway.

Hey Bob, I have an entire book about the kind of catastrophes that can
befall hikers. Most of it is due to recklessness and not stupidity. The book
"Into the Wild" by Jon Krakauer explains what can happen to a hiker on his
own.

When I am hiking (I am always by myself) I am damn careful. The thought is
never far from me that the least little thing gone wrong can turn into a
major crisis. Still, it is amazing to me the number of ways that hikers can
get themselves killed.

I once hiked for several days in the Bob Marshall Wilderness of Idaho and
never met a single other hiker. It is somewhat scary to be that much on your
own. When you step away from civilization, you had best have your head
screwed on straight.

Correct. Most of the injuries, deaths and rescue costs are for
hikers.
