Default Taken delivery of new wheel

Picked up my new rear wheel (third one on the bike since April) on
Saturday.

I'm now a fixed convert. Can't really explain what it is, it just feels
so much more fun to ride. It was a bit tricky at first - kept getting
catapulted up into the air every time I forgot. Max speed is noticably
lower at 25mph before spinning out, but overall my commute is, if
anything, a little faster than before.

The real test will be the 100km Audax this Sunday - not too bumpy so
should be fine.

Brave man. That's quite ambitious so soon in your fixed career. I'll be
interested to find out how you get on.

Please see my post "Bugger it!..." for some words of wisdom on the subject.

Agree totally about the feeling though. I used to dismiss it as
gibberish, but "zen-like" does some it up for me.

Sorry to be OT on this thread , but I had been on your web page describing
the recumbent you built and may have some useful information ? but the page
did not have any contact details on it.

People who build radio control model aircraft use plywood in the following
thickness's
1/8 , 1/16 , 1/32 and 1/64 I recently bought a sheet of 1/32 and 1/64 both
2ft * 1 ft for £5.00 the pair [ larger sheets were available ].
Just be careful you don't buy something called Lite ply as this is 1/8 with
2 hardwood venners on a balsa inner core.

Brave man.

Your comment had me worried, but I did it anyway.

I'll be interested to find out how you get on.

Thoroughly enjoyed it! Came third in at 3 hours 39, though the last 35
km was a bit lonely as "The Two Andys" went wellying off into the
distance to try and beat Andy's time from last year. Apart from
Haringworth Hill, which seems to go on forever, the hills were fun -
every downhill the group went shooting past me in top gear, then on the
uphill I shot past them as I didn't want to lose momentum. Fixed is so
much smoother - often others in the group were making multiple changes,
standing, sitting, etc, while I was smooth steady and upright! Had to
stop at the top of Haringworth Hill with suspected problem (strange
feeling underfoot) but was just the chain slackening as it bedded in
(changed chain to 3/32 less than 50km before the ride).

All in all, quite pleased, especially as I'd never ridden more than 8
miles in one go before March this year.

Yeah. I really need to get around to updating the site so that it actual
has some structure rather than being a random collection of gibberish!

I later discovered the joys of buying a ready-made fibreglass seat, but
the information is noted. Future projects may make use of it.

Thanks. Aside from a mishap with a chainstay (filed a little too much
off!) Version 2 is coming along nicely. I'm hoping to have the
chainstays on by the weekend, if not further along.

Cool. If I had the money, I'd look at making something similar, but
using CF. I do quite like the idea of making bikes out of wood.
Prototyping would definately be easier.

Jon

P.S. Demunging my email address from this post will work. If you have
any questions, feel free to get in touch.

I've tried a couple of times to contact James at the email address on that
web site to buy a copy of the plans but haven't had any response (it's been
a couple of weeks). Does anyone know if there's another address I can
contact him at?

I sent an e-mail at the weekend and waiting to see if there is a reply.
At worst we could try the guy at Xntrick Cycles who had built the one
I saw. Beyond that I had thought to contact the website owner if I
heard nothing.

I bought a set of plans - I think he answered mail from that
address after a few days but is using another one.

I won't post it here to save him from spam, but if anyone wants
to email me I'll pass it on.

Adrian

Have you built one from the plans ?
I am trying but figure it will only be a training bike in it's present form
as it is much to heavy [ most of the wood bits together weigh 16 pounds ! ]
