Default Opinions on a good tri/road bike please.

Hi all am in the market for a new tri bike (sprint races up to half
ironman). Have a limit of $6000 but want full durace & a good set of
race wheels. Any opinions would be muchly appreciated.

Dukey,

how many times are you going to post the question??? I doubt the answer
will change ;-)

I WOULD however, recommend heading in to Fitzroy Cycles (Carnegie store) and
have a chat to the guys there... (Luke is excellent)

Given the budget appears to have slipped by about a grand :-) you're still
in the price bracket for my next suggestion...

Take a look at building a custom bike...

For $6k, I'd reckon you can get yourself a nice Wilier frame (I like the
Lavaredo and the Alpe D'Huez frames?), Dura Ace (do you REALLY need Dura
Ace?), wheels like Mavic Cosmo's or Ksyrium Elite, a good saddle (I like
Selle Italia Flite Ti's) good bars, etc, etc, etc...

Depending how many K's you're going to be riding, I'd seriously consider
going back to Ultegra as your groupset, as there isn't a hell of a
difference between the two (aside from several hundred dollars)... If
you've got your heart set on Dura Ace gear, get the bottom bracket, as it's
going to be your main benefit area, especially if you go for a wheelset. If
you don't go a wheelset, go DA hubs as well...

You could also check out Terry Hammond Cycles, as he seems to be quite a
popular vendor for Wilier bikes, it's just that he has such a **** poor
attitude towards customer service...

Make sure if you build a bike, that you specify you are going to be using it
as a tri-bike, as the fit is very different to a "normal road bike" fit...

Learsport do a 02 DA bike with 03 DA wheels for $3200. I'm not sure
about the quality of the frame. http://www.learsport.com.au/

Giant TCR one with carbon frame is around $6,000 with Ksyrium wheels.

I'm looking in the $3,500 and Ultegra is fine for my needs.

Any bargains or good deals to be had around that range?

Brian

Do you know if you want a proper tri/TT bike or a road bike adapted
for a tri bike ? Big differnces between the two and the serious tri
guys I know have both.

Everyone has an opinion, right or wrong, but don't get discouraged.
You're taking the right step by asking questions. Talk to racers, visit
several different shops and ride several bikes. Pick the one you feel
most comfortable on. If Dura Ace is what you want, go for it. Most
companies make bikes designed specifically for tri's, so check out and
ride as many as you can. You'll get opinions from everybody, but in the
end it is how the bike feels under you that counts.
