Curiosity- why chain on right?

Because right-handed people hold or carry their bikes on their right,
thereby avoiding getting dirty with the chain. Well, maybe not
"because", but it is a definite advantage -- for the right-handed
majority.

Not really. Most people have the bike on whatever side is easiest -- and
for bikes without chaincases that's the one where you don't have the chain
next to you. In chaincase-obsessed holland, it's common to see two people
walking along talking to eachother with one bike to the outside on the
left and another to the outside on the right.
