Back in the day I'd use diluted grapefruit juice (why grapefruit instead of
oranage juice? I just like the taste better, that's all), but I gotta tell
you, since Cytomax came along, I've been nearly 100% cramp-free. I've also
noticed that I'm far less-likely to have peaks & valleys (physically) when I
do long rides. But the lack of cramping is what keeps me with the stuff.
I've noticed that, when I've strayed from Cytomax on centuries (had too much
diluted lemonade, coke, whater or whatever), the cramps can come back.

The other thing I like about Cytomax is that, with the right flavor, it
tastes good enough that I want to drink it. I still tend to go a bit under
the one bottle/hour recommendation, but I'm not too far away from it. With
straight water I'll drink about half as much, which is probably
under-hydrating.

Your mileage may vary.

Thanks for suggestion - I looked up CytoSport website (Endurance
section).
The Recovery drink is loaded with calcium - I was reading recently
about
osteoporosis in endurance athletes in "Bike for Life". I will research
that
brand further.

Hmmm - never heard about FRS before but if it is good enough
for Lance it must be good for the restr of us
Lance gets paid to shill for that stuff.
:http://www.spam deleted
Thanks for the tip.
Maybe it is local patriotism (I am also in Austin) but I would
expect that somebody that won the Tour 7 times has some degree
of personal integrity.

Such as Mr. Armstrong's former medical adviser, Dr. Michele Ferrari?

"If it doesn't show up in the drug controls, then it's not doping..." -
Michele Ferrari

Look - I was not entirely serious when I said "if it is good
for Lance it must be good for the rest of us". But I also think
that somebody like Lance does not have to endorse every corporation
that knocks on his door. And as cancer survivor I doubt he would
try to peddle a product that had doubtful effect on people.

It is still a celebrity endorsement made in exchange for money.

As for Mr. Armstrong endorsing a product with doubtful effect on people,
did he not go on a bicycle ride with GWB?

And last but not least - what is with that GUILT by ASSOCIATION
thing? I doubt that Lance has any control over what his medical
adviser says - neither has Obama over the views of his former
pastor. Practically everybody I know believes in something that
I would disagree with. Just because Ferrari says sth does not mean
that Lance shares that point of view.

The association is sufficient to create a reasonable doubt.

I am sorry but the page that the links points to does nothing
to debunk that "hoax". There are no arguments or studies quoted.
The only thing that they do is to label it "absurd aspartame
Health Scare" as if it was proving anything.
Watch that documentary "Sweet Misery" and tell me what is it that
scientist that publish peer-reviewed papers have to gain by
knowingly participating in a hoax. What can they possibly lose?

Google Rumsfeld, Aspartame

Yes. Rumsfeld is one of the many politicians (largely on GOP side)
that happened to be involved in shady deals with food industry.
Rumsfeld role in legalizing aspartame is discussed in details in
that documentary "Sweet Misery - Poisoned World".

I just finished "The Future of Food" - that movie deals with GE
(genetically engineered) seeds and related patents. Dan Quayle was
involved in legalizing GE corn.

As a complete digression....
I think that it is very telling that people with most contempt for
nature, evolution and genetic diversity come largely from a right
wing Christian side. Christianity is built in contempt for all
earthly things - most likely to compete with matriarchal, earth-
worshipping pagan religions. With possible exception for real-estate.
It also inspires people to embrace dogma and make statements that
are based on blind faith in it even if contradictory to common sense.
That is why it is so dangerous to have evangelical Christian as
president. As we can clearly see. Dogmatic not pragmatic.

26 posts so far and nobody said, "Beer" yet?! Come on!

Seriously, though, I just drink water while riding - until I run out :-
O, but then I haven't been riding more than a couple of hours at a
time.

In article ,

Was it Frank Shorter who used to drink de-fizzed Coca-Cola as his
"sports drink" when running marathons?

flat Coke is widely used as a "last feed" drink near the end of the race
by the pros. I know that using it that way is SOP for local fairly-pro
team Symmetrics.

I like it.

My team used to be sponsored by Sisu, makers of Hydrade. It's pretty
first-rate stuff for on-bike use, though I always knew I was working
hard once that stuff started tasting good.

On more casual rides, I'll often use an OJ/water blend, which seems to
work. I assume in these cases that I can get my fuel needs from whatever
power bar I'm carrying that day, so the fluid should just be a bit
sugary and a lot watery.

Using calorie-free sweeteners in an on-bike drink seems to be missing
the point unless you're desperate about losing weight. In most cases,
it's probably still better to have calories in your bottle.

Rides under 2 hrs, nothing. 2-4 hrs, tap water. Over 4 hrs, especially
if it's hot, anything and everything (except "sports drinks" -- been
there, done that), but I always carry water.
