Before & after bike ghettos
Per Frank Krygowski:
There are hundreds and hundreds of us who have been "blocking" cars when necessary for decades. It's the legal and practical alternative to inviting drivers to squeeze past when there's too little room for safe passing. It's written specifically into many states' laws. And it usually doesn't even cause much anger, from what I can tell. I usually have to do it for at least some time on every bike ride - and I do a lot of bike rides. I have to agree with it as a practical alternative. In fact, not blocking the lane sufficiently was responsible for one of my near-death experiences - found myself looking into the rear wheel well of a tour bus on a winding road with solid rock where a shoulder would have been. But the "provoking the sociopath thing"... I guess it's a matter of personality and experience. I see it as real, but others (probably most others) don't. -- PeteCresswell |
