Cycling in Darwin
Anyone had experience of cycling in Darwin, I am up there next week for 7
days and am taking my bike, am planning to get up early before it gets too hot. Any info would be great, I am staying at Cullen Bay |

Any info would be great, I am staying at Cullen Bay The ride from Cullen Bay out through Fanny Bay, Nightcliff and on to Casuarina beach is good (there is a bike path most of the way). If you go into town from Cullen Bay and down past the trawlers along Tiger Brennan Drive its a good ride. There is a bike path all the way from Darwin to Palmerston (15-20ks from memory) IIRC. Bagot and Trower rd. are OK as well. There's some exploring to do out around Howard Springs, Lee Point, and out towards the new port but you tend to rum out of blacktop sooner or later. If you want to do any decent mileage you basically only have one choice, the Stuart Hwy. Remember there are no speed limits up there so be prepared for cars, trucks, road trains to go past you like your going backwards flat out. Watch the vacuum created by the road trains. Stuart used to be a bit rough in a few places (12 or so years ago). I'd be interested to get your impressions on Darwin from a cyclists perspective. BTW, Darwin is always hot but I guess first thing in the morning you'll be able to say "Well at least it's not as hot as its going to be". Cheers, Brad |
