I wanted to put my old Kuwahara hybrid back into service, but after too
many Northern winters the stem had seized into the fork. After
fruitless attempts to free the stem I cut it away so as to get the fork
off the bike, and on a whim installed a 26" fork and wheel instead.
The surprise is how much I like the bike's handling now!

And I'll bet you like riding down hill all the time.

One of my mtb beaters has a 700c rear wheel and a regular 26" front wheel,
only because I didn't have a spare 26' rear wheel when I was slapping it
together for commuting duty. Works for me.

*sigh* Wouldn't it have been nice if you had a threadless steerer, headset,
and stem?

Naw... then I never would have found out how nicely this bike rides in
its current configuration. ;o)
