We should not have to go to such extremes and to ride garbage. What
would car owners say if that's what they had to do to their cars,
simply to make them workable transportation devices?

Agree, if people didn't steal, we wouldn't have to go through this.

That's not the problem. Bicycles are still thought of as children's toys
in America. A large percentage of the population only know what Huffys
are, and have only heard of those $5000 bikes... To the average joe,
bicycle theft is hardly a problem, so no solution needs to be formed.

It shouldn't matter what the item is, why steal?
I used to commute by bicycle to work, taking the train. I found a wallet on
top of the USA paper machine early in the morning. It had all the ID's,
credit cards, and $1,620 in cash. I returned everything back to the owner.
He offered me a reward, I shook his hand, told him no reward. He said he
was also a cyclist, so I told him, "from one cyclist to another."
I've also seen fancy bicycles unlocked at restaurants or orther
establishments, no one in sight, perhaps they forgot to lock their bikes. I
won't touch them, but thinking I hope others do the same if they're not the
owner.

Let's try that again.
I never lock my good bike, or use a lock for it, and thus I never leave it
anywhere I can't keep an eye on it. If I'm in that restaurant, I make sure
I have a good line of sight.

I found $240 in an ATM once, and told the store manager about it. A couple
of days later I got a call from a guy who lost money in the ATM, but it was
only about $60 bucks, so I got to keep the rest!

All men dream, but not equally.
Those who dream by night in the dusty
recesses of their minds
Awake to find that it was vanity;
But the dreamers of day are dangerous men,
That they may act their dreams with open eyes to make it possible.

Per Jasper Janssen:
But that's more vandalism
than actual *theft* (although you can't tell the difference as a victim,
of course).

I assumed that it was people stealing bikes just to ride them home.

That's how it was with cars when I lived in Hawaii - at the end of a
school day,
kids could steal your car, drive it home, and just abandon it there. The
ones
who did this tended to come from a specific section of town and the cops
would
just advise people to look there for their cars.

Sounds like kids having fun, but what if everybody did that?
Another inconvenience.

Make it *con*spicuous. If they have to repaint the bike and/or sell

it a

I guess my bike,

pretty theft-proof, then.

I had a flat rear on a triathlon bike & a broken chainstain on a
recumbent. Put the 20" rear on triathlon bike. Bike was stolen in
May. The witnesses noticed the thief & bike precisly from the
mismatch. When I stopped and gave notices to the LBS near the theft,
they specifically had remembered seeing me on that bike with the
conspiciously mismatched tires. I don't think a less conspicious
recumbent is very theft resistant.

Now that brings a recollection: In the time it takes to butter a slice of
bread, my bicycle disappeared. It was less than twenty feet away from where I
sat.

Sounds like the predecessor to http://www.autoshare.com, except for the
whole thing about it being illegal and stuff.

Ask the thieves. Hearing about thefts and fraud in detail make my blood
boil.

Hmm, probably some of that, too. I've never thrown someone else's bike in
a canal, so I really can;t say what might drive someone there.
