Default Shimano 7 speed hub?

I recently purchased a bike that is supposed to have 7 gear ratios, The
shifter shows 7 but I am only able to shift into 5. Do I have a 5 gear hub?
Or am I missing something? I am new at this game.

Any ideas?

Thanks

D. Haas

Make sure you have it adjusted correctly

1) Count the number of sprockets...7 sprockets is indeed a 7 speed hub...

2) Adjustment is key. Insufficient tension on the cable will leave you
unable to reach the larger sprockets as your shift lever will run out of
travel before the derailleur runs out of gears. Also, there are a set of
"stops" on the derailleur that determine how far it can travel up/down (used
to prevent the derailleur from throwing the chain off the sprokets). Your
LBS can help you out...

Clarify, are we talking internal gear hub or cassette?

make sure it's adjusted properly for cable tension. It's dead easy with
the Nexus hubs. Shift into "4" (or the number with a different color or
circle around it, it may have changed, but I doubt it), then adjust the
barrel adjuster for the cable until the two tiny red dots on the hub by
the cable attachment line up.

That's it and hopefully will solve your problem. If the bike is indeed
new, cable stretch is normal as everything breaks in.

As I've posted many many times before, I've ridden tens of thousands of
miles on a Shimano 7sp hub with zero issues. Hopefully you'll have the
same wonderful experience.

hope this helps.

Well, I feel like a total Fred...

of COURSE a nexus hub ain't a cassette...geez

In my defense, I've never used a multispeed hub setup before...must have a
go-round to Sheldon's site and look up the particulars...

Thanks to those of you who DO know about 'em...

Well, a fred wouldn't necessarily care if it was a Nexus as long as it
worked. Though a fred might well run an internal gear hub. Ultra freds
might run both. A derailleur and eight speed cassette mounted an
internally geared 3-spd hub. With a front derailleur on a triple
chainwheel, you'd have 72 gears to twiddle.

The original poster didn't say it was a Nexus hub. We guessed.
Shimano 7 speed could have just as easily meant an old freehub.

The context of the post suggested a new internal setup. Being limited
to five of seven gear ratios would be a derailleur adjustment problem,
not a hub problem, per se.
