I think you needed to ride along with her for a good long distance, just in case. BTW, one of the things I carry for emergencies is duct tape. I have a bunch of turns of it wrapped around the handlebar. I've never had to use it, but I did offer some to a pretty lady once--the offer was declined. Duct tape isn't something you offer to ladies, unless they're of a certain sort. *leer* *laugh* -Luigi -- www.livejournal.com/users/ouij Photos, Rants, Raves |

I was riding down the local bike path last night as night was falling. I pass by a couple of girls by the side of the path. One of them calls out "Do you have a tube?". I thought about saying "no, sorry", but I said "Well I do, but it's Presta". She said, "Mine's Presta too". I thought about handing them the tube and passing on, but I didn't see a pump anywhere. Neither of them had anything - neither pump, nor tube, nor patch kit, nor tire levers. She had a tire you could could get off the rim barehanded, that was all. So I put the tube in her tire and pumped it up for her, and gave her a few pointers. Then I told her "Get a pump, get two spare tubes, get tire levers, get a patch kit". Sheesh. Dave You did a good thing, don't ruin it by revealing to us your utter contempt for the rest of humankind. Incidentally, my very worst flats have happened on days where I had for some reason or other forgotten either my pump or my patch kit, or both. Pump & patch kit will do. A single spare tube will do, as well. And as someone else on here has already said, I'd have fixed it for them & ridden along for a piece. And maybe gotten some ice cream. But then, I'm young, unattached, and idealistic. -Luigi -- www.livejournal.com/users/ouij Photos, Rants, Raves |

Same here. Most times I have the tube etc, but lately I've been 'unprepared' and going on hope and luck. The last flat I had was in the garage before taking the bike out, so I hope that's it for a while. I'm in the bad eyesight category. Fixing flats especially patching, requires some closeup vision which I simply do not have while wearing my contacts. I live tfor the day I can afford to get my eyes lasered. I never patch flats except at home. I always take two tubes with me and just change tubes until I get home and can patch the flat. I don't go unprepared, though. I forgot my pump once and had to ride about six miles on a flat tire. -- Bob in CT Remove ".x" to reply |

I found the thorn in the tire, pulled out the effected section of tube, patched, reinstalled, inflated, removed pump and the VALVE CORE STEM BROKE OFF. Psshhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Aaagh! I tried inflating the tube then quickly inserting a toothpick into the void before all the air ran out, but I'm too slow. An incredibly attractive supermodel with long, flowing blond hair driving a red Barchetta on her way from a photo shoot stopped to give me a ride back into town. No, not really. It was an unemployed metal worker driving a beat-up F150. I placed my bike in the back with his waders, fishing gear and empties and he drove me straight to the LBS. RFM |
