Default Insurance for bike (liability, not theft)

Hi all,

I just bought a used bike (carbs powered, not gasoline) and I'd like
to get insurance. I am not worrying about my bike getting stolen (all
the insurance policies I found with google offer this) but about
running into a pedestrian and having to pay the medical bills. I live
in California.

Thanks a bunch,
Tony

I know this is a silly question to ask in regards to insurance, but do you
expect to run into pedestrians much?

Ask your insurance agent about an umbrella policy. Mine cost ~$200/year
for $1M in coverage.

Just don't run over any lawyers! On second thought, that might be kind of
difficult out there...

Seriously, your homeowners/renters/umbrella policy should cover it.

He lives in California :-)

I get £5m public liability insurance included in the price of my cycle
club membership; maybe LAB does the same?

I can't help about California, but here in Britain it's very easy to
get, unlike theft insurance. That's because, of course, a bike
doesn't often do much damage to things or people. I have it three
times over, through the Cyclists touring Club, through Audax UK, and
through the London Cycling Campaign. It comes free with membership
of each orgainzation.

I don't know whether some orgaization like the LAB offers it in the
USA. It would be worthwhile to do.

No, not AFAIK.

LAB is, unfortunately, somewhat useless. The current ruling dynasty has
transformed it into an industry shill, and changed the bylaws (without
prior notice) to make honest elections to the board difficult or
impossible. They're trying to make the board self-perpetuating.

Member services are a small fraction of what they were in, say, the
1970s. Volunteer involvement is approximately zero, and is not
welcomed. They are giving "Bicycle Friendly City" awards to cities that
ban bikes from major streets, and taking the awards away from cities
that haven't hired a bike-path designer. It's a sad, sad situation.

Fortunately, there is a reform group working to regain membership
control, which has the support of some of the country's most prominent,
knowledgeable and politically experienced cyclists. They've been able
to embarrass some board members into positive discussions.

I'd think that our own Joshua Putnam would be able to answer this quesiton,
seeing how he sells insurance. In fact, I just horsed around a little on his
website and found this:

I've cc'd him on this message, too.
