200 days
Well it's been 200 days of continuous riding since I re-started biking after many years layoff, and in the last two weeks I've felt definite changes. Rather than feeling like I'm getting the propulsive energy from my quads, often it feels like I'm getting it from sacral area, and where the body hinges, in aero-position. (weird, huh?) In fact this happened a couple days a go to such a degree that I rode my course twice just to continue to experience it. It's a good feeling and you really don't get tired. -B |

But a racing friend of mine told me several years ago that a good spin starts from the hip. He used the analogy of one of those old locomotives where there was a big driving wheel and the smaller wheels were turned by rods connected to the bigger wheel. Well the big wheel is the hip. Obviously, the rods are the femur and lower leg. The smaller wheel is the crank. (duh) Once I got my mind around it and experienced the feeling like that was happening, it helped get me to a whole new level in a big hurry. It especially helps when you're really starting to hurt, like trying to keep up with a faster pack or when climbing a big hill, to remind yourself to spin from the hip. It puts things back together. Bob C. Yeah, that's it. When I said 'sacral' I picked that b/c it's in the middle/center/back of the hip. If you just say "hip", ppl might think of the lateral hip. This is coming from the center of the hip, but in the back. Spin from the hip is exactly what I meant. I've been consciously 'spinning from the hip' b/c my left hip has an injury and it 'tweaks' and can feel week in the left leg at each revolution. But if I work and stretch, I can get it not to hurt, sometimes. (I think it's a touch of sciatica or a nerve impingment). So just like one tries to think 'left, left' to bring the non-dominate leg up to the right or dominate leg and share the effort equally, I think '(left) hip, (left) hip'. Well, it's good to know that it's a bit more than psychological. And, it is a cool way to use less energy, or get more energy, etc. -B |

If by the sacral area you are referring to the gluteus maximus (buttocks
muscles), yes. Many cyclists don't know that these muscles play a larger part in pedalling than they think. When they ache after a hard day in the mountains, they will realize it, though!
