Default Go, Go, Go Cadel!!!!!

I really hope Cadel wins the Tour.

All the organisers have to do is ban anyone with past history of doping,
then unless anyone has a perfect monthly test record for the previous
24 months before being invited to race, keep them out, and then kick
them out
and their team mates if they use dope during the event.
Its good to see that results are available so soon after tests.
Detecting the cheats swiftly is only possible if the technology allows.
Ordinary mortals like cyclists often tend to be human and consider rules
exist
to be broken, certainly if there is a better than even chance of getting
away with it.
But if policing the rules, whatever they may be, is made much more
rigid, then it
makes it all the harder to cheat.

When they started using roving speed camera vans here to police speeding
here in the ACT, people
really did slow down, because they really didn't get away with speeding.

But cheating has always been an issue in TDF.
Go right back to the early history, and there was always someone trying
to cheat.

But Anquetil, who won TDF 5 times was asked how he prepared for a race,
and he bragged that it was done with a
bottle of champagne, a few smokes, and a blonde.
He should have been banned immediately. A corrupting influence, and poor
role model :-) naughty naughty!

I'd like to see a few mountain bike stages added as well to reflect the
modern trend towards offroad riding. Maybe a hill climb time trial.
I could suggest a devil take the hindmost criterium which would be fun!

Hey, you can walk into virtually any establishment that sells framed
prints and purchase old school TdF photos of riders passing around a
ciggie. HTFU!

No seriously, I'd love Cadel to win, he was a good enough sport to turn
up to Single Speed Worlds in Castlemaine in '03. Although it's purely
subject to conjecture if he also partook in imbibing from the Tequila
that was being passed around at the LeMonds start.

(PS I'll admit to it, though there were also hairy chested men wearing
nighties having VB chasers for breakfast)

Even if Cadel gets 2nd or 3rd, its still a truly fabulous result!!!!

We are a fartarse little nation in the middle of knowhere, and for
any Aussie to front up against what Europe and the rest can offer and do
so well
has to be dreamy.

Sportsmen only rarely get to realize a dream, or come anywhere near it.

Many of us dream of a future, but few can make it happen,
and most of us can only plan an existance.

He'll certainly be watched closely next year!

If he won tomorrow in Paris, and that'd be very unlikely, he'd get the
20s time bonus.
Its not enough to put him ahead of Contador, who leads by 23 seconds.
But if Liepheimer
gets the win, his 20s bonus would push Cadel into 3rd.

Cadel would need to break away from the peleton and Contador
to win the yellow.

I remember when Lemond won the Tour with just 8s to spare, and he never
won a stage.

Its remarkable that times are so close though in Tour or 3,000 km.

I think the 3 leaders might settle for the certainty of the present
existing 1,2&3 placings.

But its a fabulous result for Cadel.

With improvement and more support and fewer cheats he could win next
year.

The doubtful characters who have been thrown out of the race
are saying they were robbed, and they'll try to get their day in court,
and to some extent they paced Cadel who had to ride all the faster to
stay with them, therefore
making it harder for the others who could not keep up.

So frequently in the past when many more Australians have finished the
THD
we read the disapointing results after the mountain stages, and heard
the
depressing interviews with these guys who couldn't stay with the leaders
nor spring with the breaks.

Son of Catherine, you have done well!

Actually, in 1989 when he won by 8 seconds he did win the final time
trial to clinch victory and a couple of other stages as well.

It was actually the 1990 Tour that he won without winning a stage.

Cadel has done himself and Australia proud. What an incredibly gutsy
effort.

Well done Cadel!

Yeah, your'e right, and on the ball, I did know he did win one of the 3
times
he made it without actually winning any stage.

Cadel was just unlucky to not get those extra 23 seconds.
Put another way, Contador was lucky he wasn't 23 seconds slower..
But anyone who can sustain such speed against the clock
must really have something.

Nearly all the winners of the Tour have been good in a TT.

Riding in the bunch along mainly flat roads doesn't much test anyone,
when everyone is an elite rider.

We'll know for sure tonight.
