\Does anyone still think that only "a few bad apples" cause mountain
biking problems?

As an interesting story on how diligent we all have to be: I haven't
done
much in terms of getting involved with MTB organizations like IMBA,
but
I
did go to a fundraiser/celebration up at China Camp last year for
IMBA.
The
ride LEADER took us on illegal trails, had us hauling our bikes off
trail on
a steep hill between two trails because she took the wrong turn
(instead
of
simply turning around and riding back 50 meters or so), and was giving
beta
on where we could go illegally and not get caught. There was a 12 year
old
kid with us. Looking back, I should have said something to her (the
leader),
but I didn't.

I have mixed feelings about riding in illegal places. I try not to
have
a
baby and bathwater approach, but I suspect these trails are illegal
for
several reasons. If, indeed, this particular area is closed due to
sensitive
habitat, I would hope everyone will do the right thing. A few apples,
bad or
not, the earth can handle, but it might the popularity that is the
biggest
challenge. Trail management is key. Salt Lake City has a unique
approach
that I think should be more widely adopted. They restrict mt. bikers
to
riding every other day in the various canyons. On odd days of the
month
you
can ride in big cottonwood canyon, on even days you can ride little
cottonwood, etc. This seems to do two things, a) it improves the
biker
hiker interactions by both lessening them and letting the hikers know
when
there is likely to be bikers around and b) reduces the impact on the
trails
(theoretically). Whatever the state decides, it is clear that the all
or
none approach isn't working.

Wow, I just got on a soap box I didn't know existed. This really is a
train
of thought type email, but I'll send it anyway because I'd like some
education in this area if you have some.

Jill

PS This got me wistful for riding in Utah, is there any interest in a
long
weekend trip this summer? Just planting the seed.

Is this the redwood area immediately above UCSC campus or something
different?

As a mountain biker who hugs trees too, I feel this is really sad
because thoughtless trail greed by few "bad apples" who have a rape
and
pillage attitude toward the land have ruined it for everyone else. My
impression from the Parks letter to MBOSC is that it really did not
have
to come to this if parking areas were kept clean, signs weren't
vandalized, trails were stayed on, and habitat was respected. Seems
like the Parks people were pretty much forced into taking a hard line.
What is particularly ironic is I bet the Mountain Bikers of Santa
Cruz,
who received this letter, include many folks who DO respect the land,
clean up, work on trails etc. The folks who don't care probably don't
belong to such a group like MBOSC or MORCA or IMBA, etc.

Not sure how to fix that problem besides everyone talking to all your
friends to encourage them to enjoy riding, AND respect the earth too.

Here is the message the rangers sent MBOSC regarding riding the trails
above Highway 9 that are in the Henry Cowell St park.
Looks like we lose another place to ride. Perhaps we need to have one
more ride up there before Feb. 18.

Mr. Mark Davidson,

As the President of the Mountain Bikers Of Santa Cruz, I was
hoping you could get the word out to your organization that the
Rangerstaff of Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park will start enforcing
the "NoBike" rule for the area of the park which is between Highway 9
and theUCSC campus on February 18, 2009.

We will be patrolling the Hwy 9 area and informing Mountain Bikersof
the enforcement of the California Code of Regulations 4360- No Bikes,
for the next few weeks in order to educate the riders of the
regulation. On the 18th of February and there after, anyone riding
bikes in the closed area could receive a citation for riding in a
closed area.

The damage to the habitat is getting out of control and more
illegal trails are starting to pop up along Hwy 9. Mountain bikers are
leaving trash, garbage and empty beverage containers in the pullouts
associated with the illegal mountain bike paths. We have posted
thearea with signs in the past but they have been vandalized and
destroyed shortly after they are posted.

We understand the desire to ride through the area and it has been
addressed on numerous occasions with District Staff. We will be
placing fliers (see attached file) on the vehicles parked in the
various pull-outs along Hwy 9 to educate the public about the
enforcement to come and would appreciate it if you could place the
notice on your website.

Sincerely,

G. Brennan

Yes, in the same way that Michael J. Vandeman causes real
environmentalists to look bad.
