Default is it safe to ride....

The Vendeman reports are making me think a shift to mtb may not be so wise.
The story of the Canadian murdered in Bolivia brought back some experiences
I had years ago. I ride a lot near the border with Mexico, and it's
probably as dangerous as Iraq, and everyone is armed. Drug smugglers,
people smugglers, desperate illegals, minutemen hunting Mexicans, hunters,
target shooters and today it is not uncommon for mtb people to find bodies
in the desert. One time I was exploring a ghost town, and some mexicans in
a 4 wheeler, came by and gave me a look. Then down the road I saw them
circle around, so I hid in the ghost town. This is where the bike gave me
the advantage, as they were too lazy to get out of their vehicle. I don't
know what they were looking for, a stash of drugs, to rob me, I don't know,
but it did remind me that in these remote spots you don't have the
protection that a roadie has on the road.

I've only been saying that for 13 years! But glad you finally came to
your senses.

I am working on creating wildlife habitat that is off-limits to
humans ("pure habitat"). Want to help? (I spent the previous 8
years fighting auto dependence and road construction.)

I think the best thing you could do is give up mtb-ing, and go back to
the road. It is obviously much safer to stay on the road with all the
idiot cagers.

Everyone's armed, wherever you go. Remember that. Tom

Maybe they just wanted to make sure you were ok.

I'll take gun-toting ATV riders over drivers any day. Cars kill more
people than anything you're likely to run across out in the bush.

Anthony

That really depends on the location.
