Too fast for the conditions leads to hospital. At least the pedestrian
is OK

I see someone called TomBertieWooster has made a very valid comment

Some of the cyclists seem to think that they must cycle as fast as they can -
and actually time their journeys so that they can see if they have shaved a
minute off their travel time to work.
Cyclists are traffic, and should not be mixed with pedestrians: their place is
on the road.
The situation of conflict between cyclists and other road users is getting
worse day by day

Agreed.

Unfortunately many benighted countries make "shared use" pathways, ie
bicyclists AND pedestrians, with pedestrians nominally having right of
way.

Cyclists certainly are traffic - but cyclists can mix safely with
pedestrians if they show appropriate consideration.

Cycling is a safe and healthy activity, and any risk is vastly
outweighed by the long term heath benefits from this excellent form of
exercise.

Try telling that to the families of the cyclists killed in London - I saw there
has just been yet another one.

Intelligent people should be able to react correctly to the provision of
so-called "shared-use" pedestrian/cycle surfaces by by refusing to use
them for cycling.

The orforritys would soon stop designating footways as cycle-ways if
that were to happen.

The risk to pedestrians is outweighed by the claimed health benefits to
cyclists?

How does that one work out?

Today a section of The Cut at Southwark was closed ( in both direction),
the closure was well marked & in plenty of time.
Just before the closure (in both directions) were 'Cyclists Dismount' signs.

A few cyclists did just that, got off their bikes & walked them along
the pavement to the other side of the closure & then rode off.

The majority just rode on the pavements, through the pedestrians and in
the morning when I was there the pavement is crowded with pedestrians.

Is it any wonder that the average pedestrian does not like cyclists?

Also agreed.
In my experience the attempts to provide "bicycleways" in the supposed
attempt to my bicycling safer and separate bicyclists from motorised
traffic, usually leads to inconvenient dangerous "farcilities".
And so for me riding on the road (visibly, predictably, and obeying
road rules) remains the safest and most enjoyable option.
The local authorities do *not* need to spend money on special facilities
for bicyclists.

Let us face it. Life is dangerous.
But not living life is not an option for people who want to enjoy
something.
