ON TROLLS

What we see in the news are some cranks, some kooks, some trolls, and
some of a fourth kind of person: the sociopath. I have no problem with
the legal system taking on sociopaths. I have had my share of trouble
with them, most notably a years-long campaign of harassment by an
individual posting to usenet under the nickname “Nuxx Bar�. He only shut
up after I got a court order telling me who he is – these people are
bullies, and like all bullies generally cowards. Another sociopath in
uk.rec.cycling (urc) calls himself *“Judith Smith�* (JMS). It is my view
that this last kind is the most toxic to an online community.

And in a curious twist, it was the troll Judith who posted to usenet the
real-life name of the troll Nuxx Bar:

Message-ID:

Guy had discovered the name from the court order, but never used that
information (apparently Nuxx Bar was sufficiently cowed by the experience
that he promised to be a good boy thereafter, and as far as we know he's
done that).

Quite how Judith found out his real name is unknown, but the most likely
explanation is that he and Nuxx Bar corresponded during the troll attacks.

And then Judith grasses him. How the worm turns.
