Default Shimano 10s and 9s compatible with alternate cable routing?

From http://www.sheldonbrown.com/dura-ace.html :

|Any 10 speed Shifter w/ 9 speed cassette using Standard derailer with
|alternate cable routing (B)

Is this something that has been determined experimentally, or is it a
Shimano supported option?

(and presumably, a pre-'94 DA derailer would work as well as a standard
derailer with cable routing B?)

Shimano always wants you to buy new, and buy Shimano. They won't even
admit that another brand of cable or tool will work with their stuff.

I'd be leery of using a pre '94 DA der with a 10 speed cassette, but if
you have one, it wouldn't hurt to try.
