Default Seat post clicking --- end the madness!!!

The clicking from my seatpost is really bcoming irritating! It's a
Dura-Ace post from the mid 1990s in a Cannondale frame, and I can't
keep it quiet. The saddle rails are cinched down nicely and I've tried
putting a little grease on everything (never greased a saddle before),
but it just keeps on clicking -apparently at the post/saddle
connection. Such a tiny problem, and should be easy to fix... But how?

i didn't realize that in addition to truing bent rims it will also
serve as a seatpost - you sir, are a genius (of the wile e coyote
variety)

Hi Giles,

You say you greased everything - does that include the entire
clamp/rail interface? I had a saddle with rails that didn't fit quite
right in the clamp and it clicked in a quite annoying fashion.
Greasing the clamp at the rails did the trick.

Otherwise, pull the post and check for grit in the seat tube and on the
post.

Might be elsewhere in the bike - experienced individuals such as Andy
Muzi and others have suggested that a bike frame will conduct sound
very nicely.

Hope you can cure it soon!

Is it possible that the post is a little smaller than the seat tube? This
would allow the clamp to tighten on it at the top, but possibly allow it to
move slightly at the bottom. If this seems like a possible cause, you might
try putting a turn or two of tape at the bottom, to see if that helps.

I am not advocating the tape as a permanent fix. I took a lot of heat some
time back for suggesting that it was OK to ride with a seat post that's too
small.

Try greasing or lubing the interfaces between the seat plastic body and
the seat rails - that was causing random clicking for me (I have a
Fizik Airone) and after applying some chain lube to the front and rear
seat/rail interface points the clicking stopped. To lube the seat I
bascially stood the seat on each end and poured some lube in each
point, let it stand for 1 hour, then flipped it on the other end and
did the same to get the front and rear points.

Thank you. I'll follow up on the suggestions. The seatpost is a 27.2,
which feels right, and _should_ be correct for any Cannondale. For the
longest time I was convinced that the noise was coming from the bottom
bracket -- but it's definitely somewhere in the seatpost/saddle.
Giles.

Sure it isn't the saddle rails in the seat frame?

And if that does not work, upgrade to the 8 pound sledgehammer.
