On June 7, 2016, a motorist driving along North Westnedge Avenue in Kalamazoo struck a group of bicyclists. Five of the cyclists died from the collision and another four were injured. While this tragedy falls into the extreme side of these incidents, looking at year-over-year statewide data of traffic crashes involving bicyclists, a troubling trend is revealed: while total crashes involving bikes have fallen over the past 10 years, 2015 marked the highest number of bike-related traffic deaths in more than a decade. Analyzing data on traffic crashes involving bicyclists illustrates many common conditions behind these accidents, and some interesting changes in trends for the record-setting 2015.
