Failure of folding bike -- user error or bad manufacturer?
http://members.lycos.nl/dezolderkamer/fiets/album/ The set of photos shows a small, cheap folding bike which after several years of service had the steerer break off, leaving the bike uncontrollable and resulted in a crash. Consensus on the Dutch group by now is that it was, in fact, shoddy manufacture. Comments? Jasper |

Anything made of metal can eventually break. I've never seen this part
break before but I've had pedal spindles, seat-pins, several bicycle frames etc break. What do you expect when you buy something cheap?? |

What do you expect when you buy something cheap?? Well, not my bike. But notice that the headset and stem construction is different from what is normal for threaded headsets. The steerer extends out of the headset, and there is an external clamp on it that will compress the steerer (using the slot), to grip the stem that does not itself have any clamping action going, but is a smooth tube which does not quite fit perfectly inside the steerer.
