car vs bike commuting on 'the car show'
Flicking through the tv on the weekend i watched a segment of the show
imaginatively titled 'The Car Show'. They were comparing commuting in Melbourne by car, train and bike. I missed the beginning but assume they all left the same point at the same time. The guy on the train arrived at the destination first, followed by the bike rider ten minutes later. The car came in much later. When they compared the costs the bike was averaged out at about $1000 a year including purchase price and muesli bars. The car was averaged out at $70,000+ a year not including servicing or speeding tickets. No mention of the other benefits of cycling ie. fitness, less pollution etc. The presenter summed up by saying he still loved his car and would choose it over both other methods even though the guy on the train had a snooze and did the crossword on his commute instead of sitting in traffic. |

(It's, what, twenty bucks a day in the CBD?) There's only two transport methods that have so much as a glimmer of hope of happening, and the one that averaged out at $70,000 is *not* one of them. I'll probably have to trial the trip from home to the CBD on a weekend some day ... -- My Usenet From: address now expires after two weeks. Never mind if I lose my house and have to live on cat food until I die of a heart attack - I'm gonna drive my car everywhere! |

You'll be able to get a government subsidy to pay for your petrol if it comes to that. |

At least one producer of The Car Show loves his pimped out MTB and rides a bit. His office is above a bike shop in Richmond. -- Roadie_scum |

car vs bike commuting on 'the car show'
I believe the RACV did a survey last year and found that within 15kms
of the city riding a bike was the quickest and most reliable way to get into work. I have no links to that but I'm sure that's what I read in the Royal Auto. As a personal anecdote: It used to take me 50 minutes to ride into work in Melbourne CBD from Sandringham (~18kms) during peak hour, door to door, not including changing time (when I was unfit and not a "real" cyclist). For the train it would usually take me about 1hr plus or minus 15mins (depending on the train line and whether I fit into the express) door to door including driving to the station. |
