Default A bike fantasy

A bicycle fantasy -
Wendi Kallins' Safe Routes to Schools program is based on a fantasy -
that bicycles will ever be a serious means of transportation for
anything but a small minority of the population.
Bikes are an important recreation accessory for a lot of people, who
ride on fire trails or roads in West Marin.
Encouraging children to ride bikes to school on our traffic-clogged
streets is child endangerment and irresponsbile.
Rob Anderson, San Anselmo

part 2 - a reader responds: Bike fan puzzled by 'fantasy'

Rob Anderson's patronizing dismissal of the Safe Routes to Schools
program (Jan. 27) made the inaccurate statement that it is a "fantasy"
to think bicycles will be used by more than a small minority. As Safe
Routes to Schools points out (www.saferoutestoschools.org), nearly one
out of every six children already walks or bikes to school, a
significant number.

What was especially odd about Mr. Anderson's letter was that the
argument he makes against the Safe Routes to Schools program - that
our streets are clogged with traffic - is why such a program is so
important: Safe Routes aims to work with traffic engineers, law
enforcement, schools, parents and students to make it safe for kids to
get to school. And a quarter of that traffic Mr. Anderson is concerned
about is from parents dropping their kids off at school, which the
Safe Routes program aims to reduce.

If Mr. Anderson is truly concerned about local traffic and the well-
being of children making their way to school, he should be applauding
the Safe Routes to Schools program and trying to find ways to offer
his support.

Perhaps Mr. Anderson can be sent to Amsterdam (preferably at his own
expense...) for a long weekend for a good, long, hard think about the
nature of "fantasy"?

If he has a couple of Hienys and a few tokes on a spliff the fantasy part
will be easy.
