I saw a Norco Monterey for sale for $10.00 so I bought it to convert to a single speed for a friend of mine.

Suntour VG steel cage rear derailleur, Suntour Power Ratchet downtube shifters. Suntour 5 speed freewheel with straight teeth. Suzue hubs with 27" Araya alloy rims. Drilled Dia Compe non-aero brake levers and Dia compe 500 brake calipers.

Frame is burgundy colour with gold lug lining.and made in Japan. No brazeons except for the rear derailleur cable housing stop which is on top of the chainstay not under it. No bottle mounts either.

I figure it might be late 1970's or early 1980's. Does that sound right?

It's already converted to a single speed. I did that last night. It now has straight bars.

Thanks and cheers.

Probably around 1980. What kind of crank?

Sugino L100 double crank with alloy arms and steel rings plus an alloy pant cuff guard.

I don't recall that model or see it in the '78 or '82 catalogs.

Based on what? Did you give them a serial number? The components were available in 1980 (if not earlier and certainly later).

the Raliegh here went thru various ID's...for a long time not an R but a Rampart....a '78...an '81...83 ? then Muzi showed up with a reference. But the seriel is under 4 coats of Rusto so....what the hey right ?

Suzue isnot listed in the databse...doesn't make the grade...same area as in the hi snoot blog I posted.

But Y is year...that's a'' folks....Y is year so the hubs are 1985. Or if yo close your eyes and wish real hard 1975.

For Suzue to use a Y then run an inscrutable past us as Y being year one of the hub model run with this particular hub as year 5 of the model run...well go with that then.

Maybe S uses a different calendar.

I'll bet the hub is dimpled.

Based on the fact that motorcycles weren't mentioned,
thereby assuring authoritative knowledge of bicycles.

What does irk me is that SR makes it like an Easter egg hunt -- apparently intentionally. The first thing you look at to date a Norco or Nishiki (same bike) is the serial number on the BB -- which, IIRC, has a year number in it (if it follows the usual Nishiki numbering system). The crank should have a manufacturing date. Paint and color scheme matter -- although I didn't follow the brand, so I can't say what colors were used in which years, etc. Just throwing out a collection of parts is not going to get you the exact year of the bike, except with rare components with limited runs -- like AX or Arabesque or Sante, but even those groups were in production for a couple of years. This sort of coyness strikes me as kind of a troll -- like saying, "Hey, I found this old Chrysler. It has a Delco alternator. What year is it?" Then you say, "well, on the Chrysler group, they told me in the first post that it was 1976!"

Sheesh! I did post the first part of the Serial # upthread but didn't see any reply that stated how old that made the frame.
