What is the wear characteristics of Ti? I don't think titanium is very good against wear. But titanium nitride coatings are very hard, somewhat slippery, and very wear resistant. That's what's on the gold-colored drill bits for which you pay a bit extra. TiN coatings are very common on industrial cutting tools, where they work wonders. ISTM that would be an easy and valuable addition to a titanium (or steel) cassette cog. - Frank Krygowski
