Isotonic Rip Off
Why are these so called 'isotonic' drinks so expensive ??
Surely just a big marketing rip off 'Drink BloggoBlast and go 10 mph faster' 15 years ago there was not an isotonic drink in sight, now at £1 a 500ml bottle, and sometimes more .... it's a big con!! I used to have a chemist mix me up some powder (steady don't go there) that he made for a Racing Greyhound trainer and slightly adjusted for human use. Basically a soluble glucose / dextrose base with potassium and magnesium salts (the stuff we lose in sweat) I used to just mix a couple of spoonfuls in some water and pure fruit juice (50/50) and it worked wonders, and NO there was nothing else in it !!! I used to get the occasional cold nose, and a severe aversion to rabbits and hares, but apart from that it was cheap as chips :-) |

Cider OK ?? You'll certainly *feel* as if you're going faster. Ever seen the drunk cyclist piece on one of the Police Stop! videos? There's a brilliant finale as he finally loses forward momentum and keels over into the ditch, having failed to notice the police car following him for the previous 10 minutes. |

I'm (just!) old enough to remember XL1 in the very early eighties (or was that actually Isotonic?), and Isostar was well established by the late eighties. it's a big con!! Agreed! :-) I used to use either plain water or *very* dilute orange juice, and then 50/50 (flat) Coke / water with 20 miles to go. It gives you a good kick for the finish, but also makes a hell of a mess of your bike if / when it oozes over your bike! |

Getting them in powdered form is usually cheaper. Try singing 'Sidcup water, Sidcup water, Comes for free, comes for free, Now it's called Dasani, Now it's called Dasani, 90p, 90p!' to tune of Frère Jacques... People will charge what they can. There probably is an advantage to isotonic drinks in _prolonged_ exertion, sometimes... -- Helen D. Vecht: Edgware. |
