Can be used with 7 speed cassettes if part # WM-NCS45 (not included) is used. Drilled for Schrader valves. QR skewers are included. MSRP 109.95 a good deal at 49.95 i only have a 5 speed gear read cluster from another ruined wheel. will it work at all with this wheel, which talks about 8/9 speed compatable? pete the bike tech newbie |

Most bikes with 27" wheels can be made to work with 700c, but you may have trouble getting the brake blocks to line up on the rim properly. If you have room to lower them now, maybe it'd be OK. Your 27" wheels are probably very old, maybe even steel. New wheels might be a lot better if you have steel rims, since steel brake terribly in the rain. But they will need stress-relieving and re-tensioning. i only have a 5 speed gear read cluster from another ruined wheel. will it work at all with this wheel, which talks about 8/9 speed compatable? No, for several reasons. Your 5-speed freewheel cluster will not fit on this wheel, which will take a (Shimano) cassette -- different animal entirely. Also, 5-speed freewheels usually mean 120 or maybe 124mm dropout spacing, so the rear wheel will not fit on the bike without stretching the rear triangle. This is probably possible, but should be done by a shop. Your derailleur may or may not work with 8-speed cassettes, since it needs more "travel" distance across all those gears. This becomes a major project: 1) getting the frame re-spaced 2) fiddling with the rear derailleur (I*had to file down the stops to get enough travel) 3) getting the new wheels 4) stress-relieving and re-tensioning the new wheels (yes, really) 5) getting a cassette 6) replacing the tires 7) adjusting the brakes -- if they reach that far. Maybe replace them Maybe you should check around for 27" wheels. Sheldon Brown can build some for you. -- David L.
