I am wondering if anyone has any experience with cycling in
St.Martins?

I haven't actually cycled it, but I've been across a lot of the island in a
taxi, with an eye toward cycling it some day.

My personal observation was that, aside from being very hilly, the roads
aren't particularly suitable for bicyclists, unless you plan to ride in the
middle of the street. If you do, beware that the traffic can get kind of
heavy, especially when the cruise ships come in.

The downtown tourist areas have VERY narrow streets that are jam-packed with
cars and taxis. Front Street, by the water on the Dutch side, is in the
process of being converted to a pedestrian mall, I believe, which would
eliminate automobiles. I'm not sure if bicycles would also be prohibited.
Even if they weren't, this wouldn't be a good place to ride, as it can be
very congested with tourists.

I'm sure, like any of the islands, there are nice places to ride on St.
Maarten. But, if you're picturing a cycling paradise from shore to shore,
you won't find it there. In fact, having been to St. Maarten, St. Thomas,
and Aruba, I can't really say I've gone away thinking that I MUST bring my
bike to any of these islands the next time.

Sorry to disappoint you. I'm sure others will present other, more
encouraging opinions.

The best thing I remember about St Martins is the nude beach on the
French side.

The funniest thing was the nude man lying on his tummy on a webbed
lounge which had big spaces between the webs. Need I say more?

The scariest thing was the Gendarmes with their submachine guns
blocking the road and doing searches as we returned to the Dutch side.

It has been some time, but I wouldn't think the bicycling is great. I
was at St Johns for a week last year, and bicycling was terrible.
Narrow winding roads, speeding taxis, no shoulders, etc.
