Yes - it's a wonder how those highly backwards cities like Utrecht, Copenhagen, Groningen and Koblenz have fallen for such an "inefficient" transport means. |

They want to go backwards and have more polluting and traffic congesting cars on the roads. Luddites is an apt description for them. |

Quite often the *actual* average speed of cars in large cities in the rush hours is about 5mph, people could walk quicker than that :-). Even when a minor accident occurs on these roads the cars can be stationary for anything up to half an hour or so. In the meantime, the walkers and cyclists have already arrived at work and are sitting in their offices etc having a cup of coffee. |

Yes - it's a wonder how those highly backwards cities like Utrecht, Copenhagen, Groningen and Koblenz have fallen for such an "inefficient" transport means. What is interesting is the variation within the same nation. Lund in Sweden manages 26-43% of journeys by pushbike yet Stockholm only 1-10%. Groningen in the Netherlands 31-55% yet Maastricht 22% and Haarlemmermeer 17%. Koblenz manages only 8% yet Greifswald 44% and Wuppertal 1-2%, less even than London. Pforzheim manages 1%, about the same as Birmingham. It seems legislation and throwing money at building cycling infrastructure in the pious hope someone will use it when it is finished may not be the answer. |
