Cyclist Mark French, who accused several of his team-mates of injecting
banned substances in the run-up to the Athens Olympics, is undergoing
treatment after being bashed at a hotel in South Melbourne on Sunday
night.

The incident occurred several days after the latest stage of the
official report of the inquiry into French's claims was tabled in the
federal Parliament.

The inquiry cast doubt on French's allegations and cleared most of his
team-mates.

The attack occurred at the Star Hotel in South Melbourne about 11:00pm
on Sunday night.

The cyclist's father, David French, believes the attack may be related
to the tabling of the report.

"I've never known of an attack like this where nothing is said," he
said.

"The guy takes one punch and is on the hoof and is running, bolting
virtually as soon as he's landed the punch.

"It's quite strange, so the fact that it's only a few days after the
Anderson report has been released is of real concern to me."
