Default suggested route from New Market to DC

I need a route from New Market on I-81 to Arlington, Va. 211 will get
me part way (I think), but how do I get rest of way to Arlington?

Here's a possibility:

Try 211 about 15 miles to US 340 then north about 50 miles to VA route 7
near Berryville, then 7 east about 15 mules to Purcellville, then
another 40 miles on the Washington & Old Dominion trail into Arlington.

Instead of 340 all the way you could use the Skyline drive to Front
Royal if you really like hills.

Alternatively, you could take a left off the W & OD on to King
St./Rte. 15 North and then cross the river at White's Ferry and catch
the C & O Canal to Georgetown.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've found a lot about the dc area through
waba.com (org?). How safe is rt 340 and rt 7 north of Luray? I was on
340 south of Luray last weekend and the traffic was heavy and fast.

Is there a way to get into Arlington from the south? What about bike rt
1?

I can't tell you about the Luray area, but I did ride from Front Royal to
DC (and beyond) in 2003. The pages describing the trip are he

http://www.officebears.com/cycling/t...nandoah03.html

Basically, the route was:

Start: Front Royal at US340 and 6th Street.
Take 6th Street east, becomes Happy Creek Road.
Right on Dismal Hollow Rd. (647) (just before crossing I-66), ends at Va.55.
Turn left on Va.55 (store). Follow for 10 miles. Ends at US17.
Right (south) on US17. 1/2 mile.
Left on Maidstone Rd. (may be off Va. 55)
Right on Rectortown Rd. (at Rectortown)
Left on Atoka Rd.
Right on US50 at Atoka. Climb the hill.
Left (north) on St. Louis Rd. (611). 7.5 miles to
Bear left on Silcott Springs Rd. (690)
Right on Va. 7 at Purcellville.
Left on 611 in ther center of town.
Turn right on W&OD Trail. It's about 10 miles to Leesburg.
About 28 miles further on, turn onto the Custis Trail. This can be
complicated so you might have to ask someone.
A couple of miles after that you are dumped out at the Potomac near
Arlington Cemetery.
