Default hub gear question

Anyone had any experience of using individual cassette sprockets on a s/a 3
speed hub gear. It looks to me that with a little bit of judicious grinding
these would work and enable a wide range of 3/32" sprockets to be selected
from.

Default hub gear question

I've done this with sprockets for a Nexus hub as suggested on Sheldon's
pages. I removed three of the tabs and filed radii on the three
remaining ones.

I think SA sprockets *may* be the same, so if you can get them to fit,
go for it!

I find them to rattle a bit more than the proper ones though.

Cheers,

Nick

There's a lot of interchangeability between Sturmey, Sachs, and
Shimano 3-speed hub cogs, and a wide variety of sizes are still
available. If that's not enough, though:

From Sheldon Brown's site:

http://www.sheldonbrown.com/sturmey-archer.html

.... It is also possible to modify Shimano cassette sprockets with a
Dremel grinder if you need something bigger. This is not particularly
difficult to do.

You got to be very careful if you don't know where you're going, because you might not get there.

Or smaller.

There's a 13-tooth cog on a Nexus-7 on one of the daily drivers 'round
here, ground from a cassette outer cog.

Done it!!
Took about 10mins with a Dremel but the sprocket is quite loose on the hub,
when the circlip is in place, as its a lot thinner than the genuine article.
So a spacer of some sort will be necessary. From looking it looks like its
going to have to be thinner than a cassette
spacer.................................any ideas?

Sturmey, SRAM/Sachs, Shimano, and cheapo crappy coaster brake hubs all use
the same three-spline sprockets. Those things are *widely* available, just
for the coaster hubs even if not for any of the gearhub hubs. Mostly
they're 1/8 rather than 3/32 thick, but those chains are not that much
heavier and are a lot more maintenancefree.

Lastly, sprockets intended for a cassette have shallow teeth and usually
ramps & stuff specifically to allow it to derail easily. This would be a
bad thing on a singlespeed drivetrain.
