Yet again the EDP are at it.

"Woman cyclist dies in A47 crash

24 December 2005 16:14

SWAFFHAM: An elderly woman died on Christmas Eve on the A47. The woman was
cycling on the single-lane carriageway towards King's Lynn when her bike was
in collision with a black Citroen car at about 11.50am. It is understood she
had just joined the A47 from the Swaffham junction, a few metres from where
the bypass duals."

One never but never reads in the EDP that a car is in collision with a
bike... always those pesky cyclists or bikes doing the colliding..

BAH!

Par for the course re. some journalists. The recent pile-up on the M62 was
apparently caused by fog which presumably took over control of the vehicles.

That's because they write the story from the riders perspective...

I had to laugh at the 'Motorist dies in tree collision' headline on the
BBC Dorset website yesterday. It conjured up a rather surreal mental
image...

(I don't deny the tragedy of the situation - it was the coice of *words*
which amused.)

once again you are getting on your high horse for no reason:

Article written about the cyclist : "in collision with" is neutral as to
cause. Was hit by, presumes car's fault, collided with presumes riders
fault. In collision with is neutral.

Jounalists always write such stories from a personal interest perspective.
The completely neutral "The was a collision between cyclist and car in which
the cyclist was killed" is impersonal and comp[letely neutral but is bad and
boring journalism.

Would you care to suggest a rewrite of the piece that meets your criteria?

Yes, I agree with you completely, leave the allocation of blame to the
court not the newspaper.

Then why isn't the "neutral" wording the other way round -- that "a car
was in collision with a cycle"

Sorry but it just isn't neutral at all it clearly directs one way or the
other. Don't talk twaddle!

The article was about the lady. To switch subject and objects around would
have been bad English and bad journalism.

I don't think it's overt car-centric bias on the part of the
journos, but the bias is certainly implied in their choice of words.
And that's what I find so exasperating about the language used.

"A car and a bicycle were in collision" would, IMHO, have been neutral
reporting.

Ouch! Losing that much bark must've hurt!

Bicycle helmets are really a bit of a scam.
They make most cyclists slightly less safe but there's money in selling them.
