Replacing in time might be even more important with Shimano "Ice Tech"
discs, which have steel on the outside and an aluminum core. At a bike
store they showed me an example of what can happen if such a disc is
allowed to wear below 1.5 mm: Where the brake shoes touch, pieces of the
disc had just broken off.

OK, so you don't need a micrometer after all.
Just look for when then aluminium starts to
show
