Default Half-radial rear with the radial side right?

It's my understanding that the additional width of 10 speed casettes
necessitates this design on some wheels. Note, for instance, that
Shimano (and most aftermarket manufacturers) warn that their 10 speed
casettes are NOT for use on Shimano paired spoke wheels, some Mavic 9
speed hubs (including ksyriums), and powertap hubs, to name a few.

Two observations:

Sometimes an experiment is conducted just to find out how bad the idea
really is.

Without knowing what the rest of the parameters of the wheel look
like, it's hard to say anything at all about what they may or may not
really be trying to achieve.

Who pays for the experiment? Answer: buyers of the experimental
parts.

Whenever I've seen this, it has been for the purpose of improving
derailer clearance on non-standard wheels.

I first saw it in the mid-70s, when a very original thinker named
Farnsworth showed up at the Bicycle Revival where I was working, with
the first 6-speed freewheel I had ever seen. He had machine down the
shoulder on his Campagnolo hub so that the 6 speed freewheel would fit
farther to the left, but this brought the derailer too close to the
spokes. He dealt with this by spoking the right side heads-out radial.

Funny how spreading the frame and lengtening the axle never occurred to
anybody back then...seemed as if the 120 mm spacing dimension had been
handed down on stone tablets from Mt. Sinai...

(Farnsworth was a very interesting guy, a fanatic believer in super long
cranks. His theory was that the crank should be half the length of the
rider's femur. It was also from him that I learned the 3-leading
3-trailing spoke pattern.)

A lycantropic headgear storage device noted:

really is.

Yep. That's what led me to build up a front wheel with all leading
spokes on one flange, all trailing on the other side. Might have worked
with some hubs, but not the Normandy large-flange one I used...the
flanges twisted and the wheel went completely slack in just a very few
miles...
