Hi all,

I got my letter published in Brisbane's esteemed "Courier Mail" today,
in response to an article yesteday about Brisbane's 'mega traffic
jam'...

-----------

I refer to the article "Chaos behind the gridlock" (C-M, p5, 1/9/05).
On the day of the 'mega traffic jam', I enjoyed a quick, easy commute
into my city workplace on my bicycle.

I safely travelled on a route utilising main roads, back streets and
bikeways, generally travelling much faster than the traffic gridlocked
on the streets.

I don't always commute on my bike, though. Whenever I'm feeling too
tired, its raining, or I'm just plain lazy - I catch the bus. I sit
back, relax, and read the paper or listen to my walkman, and
occasionally look out the window from the vantage point of the SE
Busway as we rocket past the stationary traffic on the freeway.

Many of the gridlocked routes highlighted in the article are
well-serviced
by either bus or train routes - even the airport. It is time that the
commuters of Brisbane realised that their car shouldn't be their 'first
choice' for travelling to work. There are a variety of options out
there for
them - some more physically active than others, but all of them much
less
stressful and generally much quicker and cheaper.

---------------

Yay!! Hopefully some of the commuters in BrisneyLand will get something
out of it...

Cheers all,
Abby (who'll be at the Murrarie crits tomorrow)

There is one problem with this... you're praising the council bus
services! This leads me to believe that you don't catch the buses very
often :-)

The main reason that I ride to work is because the Brisbane bus service
is so damn useless! I never drive as my wife uses the car (to drive a
non-bus serviced route to her work, on the bayside). But I've found that
riding is faster than waiting for the often non-existant or super late
(or super early which is just as bad) bus. I often get to the bus stop,
and after a 20 min wait start cursing myself with "should have ridden".

Hi Joel,

Yes, I definitely agree that bus services could be better!! But I'll
put up with the 'slow amble' of a bus rather than drive my car...

Of course, I usually ride instead. From Mt Gravatt to the City takes 40
- 50min on the bus, but only 30 minutes on the treadly. So I actually
save time by exercising!! Beautiful...

Abby
