red-stripe nexus inter-8 - gears frozen

Default red-stripe nexus inter-8 - gears frozen

i can not shift down from 4th gear on my red-stripe nexus inter-8
in fact, cranks are totally frozen in gears 5-8

returning shifter to 1-4 range and all is fine there again

If the cranks are totally frozen it is likely a failure inside the
hub.
If you are still under warranty from shimano (1 year) return it to the
place of purchase.
Otherwise you can order a new gearbox to replace the old one, and any
local
bike mechanic should be able to effect the replacement.

would like to hear guesses on what is most likely at fault

"It is possible for the large bearing retainer to get damaged when
installing the internal assembly back into the hub shell after
service. If a bearing gets wedged under ring gear 1 and it is not able
to freewheel then the bike will not pedal in 5th-8th gear."

That sounds like your problem, and if it is just a wedged bearing it
should be easy to fix.

a ball slipped out of retainer and of to the cogs.
got new retainer instead of fixing the lousy one.

will update on score
