While a USGS search doesn't directly reply, a WIKIGoogle does: 'The United States Geographical Survey states that the geographic center of North America is "6 miles west of Balta, Pierce County, North Dakota" at approximately 48°10′N 100°10′W, approximately 15 miles (24 km) from Rugby, North Dakota. The USGS further states that “No marked or monumented point has been established by any government agency as the geographic center of either the 50 States, the conterminous United States, or the North American continent.” Nonetheless, there is a 15-foot (4.5 m) field stone obelisk in Rugby claiming to mark the center. The North American continental pole of inaccessibility is located 1,650 km (1,030 mi) from the nearest coastline, between Allen and Kyle, South Dakota at 43.36°N 101.97°W.[24] |

PINNING the subject down https://www.google.com/webhp?hl=en&t...1152 &bih=635 there may be a 'golden age' of obelisks in the US. I walked into one at Washburn (dropping the 'e' ?) see he https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&...+obelisk&btnG= there's a story there hmmmm online ? where the original idea was a MONOLITH 2b world's largest, off course, for the World's Fair where the immense stone was quarried then the quarry owner didn't deliver. of Brownstone like where Lucy Dahlgrin lived, right ? Brownstone has an elusive quality where you'd swear it was fake stone made from concrete. Check the map. Greeeaaaaaaat cycling: great air, no traffic on weekdays, almost big sky, facilities. |

BICYCLE TOURING NORTH DAKOTA
11-12 years ago I rode CANDISC. It followed the Lewis&Clark routes along the Missouri River. Both sides. An excellent tour. Just the right amount of people, around 500. Campsites were great, parks or high schools. Great untraveled roads. I highly recommend this week long tour.
Funny how they use Sakakawea instead of Sacajawea. Must be a North Dakota thing. About the only potential problem would be where they are drilling for oil in the western part of the state. Heavy truck traffic. Assume the planners avoid these areas. I remember being on a gravel road in the middle of the day and thinking "I have no idea where the next closest human being might be." Touring was an exercise in planning and strategy - as in, "We have to make it to _that_ town tonight, because if we don't, we'll never make it to a place to buy food tomorrow." Kind of like a chess game, planning one's moves ahead. -- - Frank Krygowski |

GOOD RIDE, the unbanked Missouri stretch. When I drove paaaaasststtt at 2Am, an Indian girl voice demanded I stop for a walk...there are two boats atop the van.
My first drive to the coast sopped at Stinkyone State Park at Christmas. Now Sinkyone State Park... There are obvious current variations on this theme but we'll let it slide... |
