MTB Front Hub Standard Flange Size: Any Such Thing?
I'm shopping for parts to build the wheelset for my Fargo frame.
I'm thinking a Shimano Deore M525 will do the job for less than thirty bucks (http://tinyurl.com/28eh22n), but it would be nice if better hubs' flange sizes were identical so I could swap it out without buying a new set of spokes if, for some reason, it proved unsatisfactory. So, bottom line, is there a flange size that most makers use? Or are they all slightly different? -- PeteCresswell |

Per (PeteCresswell):
Shimano Deore M525 Oops... just read the reviews.... maybe I won't go there after all. But the question stands: is there a "standard" flange dimension so that different makes/models can be interchanged w/o replacing spokes. -- PeteCresswell |

M525 is a fine product _if_ you give it a shot of actual lubricant and a proper bearing adjustment before putting it into service. Regarding hub flange sizes (diameter and width), standards are nice. That's why we enjoy so very many! -- Andrew Muzi www.yellowjersey.org/ Open every day since 1 April, 1971 |

Runs about a season without bearing prep, just like anything else. If that bothers anyone, there are always Phil Wood products, which commonly run 20 years or more no matter the degree of neglect or abuse. -- Andrew Muzi www.yellowjersey.org/ Open every day since 1 April, 1971 |

That said, spend ten bucks to recone them and they're usually good for another ten years. Deore is finer in comparison. As Muzi said. Shot of grease and a readust. Ride. |

Certainly I've had ones that were supplied too tight and needed a bit of adjusting. Regarding hub flange sizes (diameter and width), standards are nice. That's why we enjoy so very many! Standards are like toothbrushes-- they're great but you wouldn't want to use someone else's. (seen on someone's sig somewhere). |

Certainly I've had ones that were supplied too tight and needed a bit of adjusting. Usually there's not enough. I top it off with something that looks similar, like cheap automotive grease. Doesn't matter much. Yes, I know that not all greases aren't compatible with each other, but then again, bike hubs aren't really the highest tolerance tech, either. |

I was under the impression that Shimano cones were replaceable but cups were not, not so? or do the cones generally wear out before the cups? (now you've made me think that I ought to service my rear hub this winter, even though I have not been riding nearly as much as I wanted to - I maybe only have 500 miles on it) nate |
