Grand Tour dominance- last ten years
The recent discussions about team dominance got me to look back at the
last ten years. USPS has been the dominant GT team of this period, followed by ONCE/Liberty Seguros, although Italian registered teams have been the most successful overall. The Italians have won a third of all the GTs by dominating their own race and with Pantani's one TdF win. The Spanish hang in there with 6 Vuelta wins and Indurain's last TdF win. Heras is top Vuelta hombre with 3 wins. Armstrong singlehandedly carries the American flag, his 6 wins are the total American wins and of course he rules the roost with his TDF totals. The French, other than Jaja's Vuelta win, are not on the page. (Sorry it's a long post, not sure how to format tables here) All Grand Tours (Giro d'Italia, Tour de France, Vuelta a Espana) 1995-2004. The 2005 Giro is not included. .. Armstrong
singlehandedly carries the American flag, his 6 wins are the total American wins and of course he rules the roost with his TDF totals. Ooohh, better watch it now. Lemond will tell you that if it hadn't been for that hunting accident in 1987 he'd be whipping Armstrong's ass, especially in Lance's last 6 TfF's. And he'll accuse you of doping, after which time Greg'd start bitching about Hinault, and making fun of Indurain's hair. |

None Index Alexia 0, 0% Lampre 0, 0% Mapei 0, 0% Panaria 0, 0% Polti 0, 0% It's not really fair to put Mapei in that group. Sure, they expected Bugno to win the Giro for them, and they got a top ten finish in the Tour, but they were never really serious about anything but the classics. Regarding Polti, it's funny to remember how much **** Virenque used to talk, but he's never won a grant tour. |

Dumbass - They were very serious about trying to win a GT - the head of Mapei, Giorgio Squinzi, stated it as a primary goal. They hired various GC riders, but never got the right guys. thanks, K. Gringioni. |
