Shimano Chain
I have a Shimano CN-UG50 chain. I hear that all bikes made since 1989 that
are Shimano equiped have hyperglide chains. Is my chain hyperglide? I have checked on the Shimano web site but they don't seem to have anything on it. |

Uniglide works with indexed 7 speed and non-indexed cassettes might even get
it to work with 8 speed. It will not sit on a 9 speed system and will shift poorly due to the edges not be beveled. |

Originally, UG predated Hyperglide, recently Shimano reached pack in the bag of names and brought UG back for Tourney level chains. I hear that all bikes made since 1989 that are Shimano equiped have hyperglide chains. That has never been the case, although Shimano would like it that way. Even within the Shimano line there have been several versions of hyperglide (HG) chains, as well as Uniglide (UG) and Interglide (IG). Is my chain hyperglide? It is hyperglide compatible, but it is at the bottom of the list. Then again alot of other chains, like SRAM and Wipperman are HG comp. Can it be split at any link like a ordanary chain, or does it require "special treatment", like the pins being pushed all the way out and new pins to rejoin the chain. The document you gave me is a bit breif. I have checked on the Shimano web site but they don't seem to have anything on it. Here's a decent chart: http://www.gama.si/bike/manual/shimano/index.htm R |

The document you gave me is a bit breif. It helps if you ask the question that you want answered. I would treat it like any other HyperGlide chain. That is to say, I would throw it in the closest waste bin and install a propper chain. snip R BTW any 7.1mm chain should work. |

i think ug is ultra glide and isnt hg compatible because it was for a 7speed
spacing, im not sure though. "Michael_jd" wrote in message ... I have a Shimano CN-UG50 chain. I hear that all bikes made since 1989 that are Shimano equiped have hyperglide chains. Is my chain hyperglide? I have checked on the Shimano web site but they don't seem to have anything on it. |
