Hikers Blamed for Fire - 05/14/2004

Firefighters are still battling a wildfire burning in the Whitewater
Canyons.

Flames have spread to nearly 1,200 acres. No buildings are threatened.
But, one person has been injured. The fire is only 15% contained.
However, full containment is expected by Saturday night.

Officials say an Ohio woman - hiking in the area, accidentally started
the blaze when a cooking fire she lit spread into the grass. She has
been cited, and may be held responsible for the costs of the fire.

We had a similar incident a few years ago in one of the National Parks. Sea
Kayakers in the Abel Tasman area camped for the night and the campfire on
the beach ignited the forest behind it. It cleaned up a few hectares in one
of the most scenic places around the bays. Still a Big black ugly scar
today.
I guess if they'd been on bikes they could have made it to one of the
established camping areas with their proper fire sites.

ZIP.

Well, For one thing, if they had gotten to a proper site, then there would
be no need for a forest fire. i dont know of ANY mountain biker that would
have a reason for lighiting a fire.

Personally when i go camping, i use portable stoves. If there is a safe pit
for a fire, i might have one. I always make sure the fire is out when i go
to bed, or when i leave the area.

One thing i was wondering -- What do you have a PHD in? how old are you? and
what part of the world do you live in???

Micheal (a mtn biker who stays on the trail.)

Don't go there. It's an exercise in futility. ;-)

I heard the fire was started by satellites from outerspace.
