Has anyone in this message area built this bike? I bought the plans and I
think I will make this a project.

Hi Emil,

I too was looking at the plans. I found one person that built it, (I can't
remember his name). By the sounds of it, after completing the project he
didn't ride it much. I am not sure why. I am extremely interested in your
results and I am hoping that you will communicate them on this forum for all
of us to read.

Dakker.

I received the plans today and looked over them briefly. I have a friend
that built a Cozy airplane that is carbon fiber and I am trying to get a
hold of him to pick his brains for suppliers in my neck of the woods.
If I do get it started I certainly will keep the group informed of the
progress.

Emil, For your composite supplies, Aircraft Spruce and Specialty does
a good mail order business or Wicks Aircraft and Supply. These are the
two main ones I used when I built an experimental aircraft. Aircraft
Spruce has stores east and west. Wicks is in Highland, IL. Look them
up online. Each have nice catalogues and all the composite supplies
you'd need.

Let us know how it goes. I've looked at those plans a few times and
I'm really tempted... Ken

Looks to me like this design results in a very tight riding angle, i.e.
the rider is scrunched up. The seat back is nearly vertical and the BB
is higher than the seat base. I don't think this would be a comfortable
riding position.

After watching the video provided I do notice that there is little room
between the steering column and the rider.
I am obese and plan on using a recumbent bike for exercise. I use a EZ-1
now with no problem.
I think I should build a template out of wood to see if I fit.

Emil:

My take on the Groundhugger (a 40 some odd year old design) is that very few
of them have been built and only a few of them, if any, are ridden
regularly. If the designer or anyone else can provide information to the
contrary, I will stand corrected. As suggested in the video and pointed out
by Mr. Riley the riding position of the Groundhugger appears to be very
uncomfortable and scrunched up.

My question to you is this - why not build a Tour Easy clone? Many Tour
Easy clones have been built successfully over the years and are in daily
use. If you are riding an EZ 1 with success I would think a Tour Easy clone
would provide you with great additional benefits, comfort and enjoyment.

My advice - cut your loss on the Groundhugger and take a look at the Tour
Easy plans offered he

As an added bonus you would have access to help and support from
homebuilders on the internet.

I noticed the fairly upright position as well but no reason you can't alter
the design to suit your taste

My feeling is tho it is more complex and heavier than it needs to be, plenty
of other designs out there that might be better and easier to make

The EZ rider is upright itself. I really am interested in using carbon
fiber as a frame. I have zero knowledge about welding and or tube bending
and no equipment to do either. From looking at what is out there you can go
from a lazy chair position to upright and SWB, LWB etc....
We will see how it may proceed as you said it could be modified. I am
fortunate to be at a place that teaches Rhino and have access to a few
people that will help modify the drawings if I ask.
