What crank length is on your Muni?
------------------------------------------------------------------------ A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the results, please visit http://www.unicyclist.com/thread/71635 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Question: What crank length(s) do you prefer? - 125 mm - 135 mm - 145 mm - 150 mm - 160 mm - 165 mm - 170 mm - 175 mm - Dual Position 125 mm/150 mm - Dual Position 135 mm/165 mm ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I see that some folks use shorter cranks for the momentum, while others like longer cranks for the power. Certainly terrain can vary, so longer cranks for tech stuff and climbing, shorter cranks to spin out the flats. What crank length is on your Muni?
Your thread title asks what crank length is on your muni, but the poll asks which length you prefer. I use 150's on a 24 x 2.6" muni, and 170's on a 24 x 3" muni. However, I also voted for 160's because I believe it would be a good "in between" size that I would prefer. I love 150's - but only with a 2.6" tire. A 3" is just too big and heavy to ride with 150's. So I believe it depends somewhat on the tire you use. -- forrestunifreak '*-My Gallery-*' (http://tinyurl.com/wcrsl) *www.qu-ax.com* *unicycle for christ* Joe "Hodgekins" wrote: Oh... they don't kick bricks, do they? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ forrestunifreak's Profile: http://www.unicyclist.com/profile/6828 View this thread: http://www.unicyclist.com/thread/71635 Posted Via Usenet.com Premium Usenet Newsgroup Services ---------------------------------------------------------- http://www.usenet.com |

I agree, a wider tire makes a difference as does wheel size, so just pick your favorites and post why. Nurse Ben wrote: I agree, a wider tire makes a difference as does wheel size, so just pick your favorites and post why. Not only does wheel size effect it but also leg length. I think shorter people are more likely to enjoy shorter cranks. I'm 5' 7" and I run 150mm cranks on my 24" large marge rim with 3" duro. I had longer cranks but they just felt too long. 150mm feels just right for me. -- Brian O. *'ProjectUNI' (http://www.projectuni.com) - *The First Serious Unicycle Computer Game* - -ProjectUNI update available 'here!' 165 on the 26x2.7 which I ride the most 150 on the 24x3 165 on the 29x2.35 I have used everything from 125 to 175 on each of them and have found these combos to work the best for the hilly trails I usually ride. -- mtnjeffe ------------------------------------------------------------------------ mtnjeffe's Profile: http://www.unicyclist.com/profile/16807 View this thread: http://www.unicyclist.com/thread/71635 Posted Via Usenet.com Premium Usenet Newsgroup Services ---------------------------------------------------------- http://www.usenet.com |

I've ridden with various sizes over the years, all the way back to a regular Miyata with 140s. My Wilder came with 175s, which were very long but great on the technical stuff. A few years back I got a pair of 145s. Great for going faster but less fun on the technical stuff, especially going downward, where I felt less confident due to less leverage. Now I have 160s on there, and it seems like a nice balance of both worlds. For me, that is, and the terrain I like to ride on. Heading off to Unicon, shorter cranks would undoubtedly be better for the races, but longer ones for the fun rides... -- johnfoss John Foss Email: "jfoss" at "unicycling.com" -- www.unicycling.com ----------------------------------------------- Man with broken collar bone say: "Have you checked your shoelaces lately?" ------------------------------------------------------------------------ johnfoss's Profile: http://www.unicyclist.com/profile/832 View this thread: http://www.unicyclist.com/thread/71635 Posted Via Usenet.com Premium Usenet Newsgroup Services ---------------------------------------------------------- http://www.usenet.com |

johnfoss wrote: Heading off to Unicon, shorter cranks would undoubtedly be better for the races, but longer ones for the fun rides... Thus my dilemma. At NAUCC recently, I took my Torker DX with 150's for racing, and my QU-AX with 170's for the downhill competition and other riding. Much easier then switching cranks, but with the added hassle of having to carry it around on the back of the car. -- forrestunifreak '*-My Gallery-*' (http://tinyurl.com/wcrsl) *www.qu-ax.com* *unicycle for christ* Joe "Hodgekins" wrote: Oh... they don't kick bricks, do they? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ forrestunifreak's Profile: http://www.unicyclist.com/profile/6828 View this thread: http://www.unicyclist.com/thread/71635 Posted Via Usenet.com Premium Usenet Newsgroup Services ---------------------------------------------------------- http://www.usenet.com |

What crank length is on your Muni?
Recently I tried some MUni with 110s on my N36--not recommended, even with a brake! My KH24 came with 165s back in 2005 when I was a newbie, and I never liked them. I switched to 150s after a dozen or so "real" MUni rides, and I thought they were great. While training on my geared KH29 for RTL, I got used to 125s with a knobby 29er tire. I ultimately decided that they're a little too short when drops are involved on the trail. Uphill was fine. Post RTL, I hopped on my KH24 with 150s, and it felt like way too much work. So I switched to 137s, and they're awesome. I also plan to put 137s on my KH29, once my geared hub is repaired. The 137s feel great for climbing. The limit of what I feel comfortable going downhill has more to do with not having a brake than having "short" cranks. -- phlegm ------------------------------------------------------------------------ phlegm's Profile: http://www.unicyclist.com/profile/8382 View this thread: http://www.unicyclist.com/thread/71635 Posted Via Usenet.com Premium Usenet Newsgroup Services ---------------------------------------------------------- http://www.usenet.com |

It all comes down to personal preference. I prefer 150mm.
