Default a quarter of motorists want cyclists to pay road tax

A study by Confused.com, has found that motorists have had enough of
two-wheeled trekkers, with 25% of drivers stating that they are keen to see
cyclists pay road tax.

A further 14% want bicycles to have number plates displayed and nearly half
of respondents (44%) want cyclists to pass an equivalent version of the
driving test before they can ride on the road.

A lot of cyclists own a car as well as a bicycle, so already pay excise
duty - is road tax just for bicycles?

What about these freeloaders?
Should they cough up too?

We've got two cars. Should we really only be paying road tax on one of them?

Cars ARE subject to excise duty, If you don't use them on the public highway
however you don't need to pay. I would have thought all car driver knew
that!

Two million motor vehicles are exempt though, including this lot.

Well, yes... but a PP seemed to try to justify not having to pay road tax on
a bike by referring to the road tax he pays on his car. If that is a valid
justification (I accept that it might not be), one would logically expect it
apply equally in similar cases.

Of course, he might have just been spouting nonsense.

I would like to see VED scrapped and added to fuel duty and then at least
all road users of fossil fuelled vehicles would pay for the mileage they did
rather than a nominal sum for a car that ends up sitting on the driveway
like mine does for most of the time. That would be a fairer system.

Nevertheless 25% of motorists is not a majority of motorists (at least not
when I went to school), let alone a majority of the population. It sounds
like sour grapes to me.
I for one wouldn't mind paying a fare share towards the upkeep of the
highways and byways, provided that's what it went towards of course.
