Whatever Were They Thinking??
While I don't see how people can actually spill over these speed bumps, they are definitely annoying and I hope they can be replace with "smoother" ones with more angled "approaches" on either side. Why the City needs to spend money "studying" this matter is ridiculous. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/loca...p-248814c.html EXCERPT City officials have conceded they may have goofed by putting 2-inch-high bumps on a bike path over the Williamsburg Bridge. Transportation Department officials said they are bringing in a consultant to study the bumps, which were first detailed in the Daily News. The consultant will "evaluate the various issues raised in recent weeks about the path to see if some improvements can be made," DOT officials said. Critics charge the 26 bumps in question have caused scores of bicyclists to crash and that the bumps violate federal accessibility guidelines for the disabled. The bumps are actually metal plates covering expansion joints on the Manhattan side of the path - with a way-too-high straight edge on one side. The city is facing $10 million in lawsuits by injured bikers over the covers - one-fifth the cost of the $50 million path opened in 2002. |
